Nineteen

Gruff was sitting in his customary place on the beach the next morning, working on his turtle carvings. She stood watching him for a minute, marveling at how his quick movements brought out the tiniest details to create the most beautiful figurines that she had ever seen.

She decided to talk to him about the murder.

“Hey Gruff, how are you doing?”

“As well as can be expected, I s’pose,” he said.

He eyed her warily as Netta had never come out to talk to him before about anything.

“You really are quite the artist. I wish that I could do something as well as you,” Netta said.

“It just takes practice,” Gruff muttered.

“I’m trying to figure out who killed Scylla,” Netta said. “I’ve been accused of killing her and someone has been threatening me.”

“You told me you weren’t involved,” he said, accusingly.

“I wasn’t then. But someone has been coming after me, so I felt forced to get involved,” she said.

He continued to eye her suspiciously.

“I was wondering where you were the night that she was killed,” Netta said.

“Here, on the beach, where I live most of the time,” Gruff answered.

“Did you hear or see anything that could give a clue about who the killer could be?” Netta asked.

“No, and even if I did, I wouldn’t tell you. Whoever killed Scylla did the world a favor. She didn’t deserve to breathe the same air as other people,” Gruff said.

“Did you kill her?” Netta asked.

Gruff emitted a choked laugh.

“You have some nerve. Why don’t you just go bugger off?”

As Netta walked back to the inn, she mumbled to herself, “And that is why I break into people’s houses. I get a lot more answers a lot faster.”

A little while later, she thought she would try the in-person interview strategy again, and headed over to the house where Scylla’s parents had lived for the last thirty years.

Mrs. Mandrake was very welcoming.

“Would you like some coffee, Dear?” she asked.

“No thank you,” Netta said. “I just wanted to check on you and find out if you were doing okay. Chary said that you guys were fond of Justine’s baking, so I thought that I would bring you some of her muffins.”

“Thank you. That is very nice of you,” Mrs. Mandrake gushed.

Mr. Mandrake, on the other hand, was not in the mood for niceties.

“Have you found out anything about our Scylla’s murder?”

“It’s only been a few days and unfortunately, most investigations take time. Detective Sussex is working very hard to solve this case,” Netta said.

“We know that you also investigate cases, and we know that you want to clear your name since Scylla ratted you out in her newspaper a few times and you hated her,” Mr. Mandrake said. “What do you know?”

“Paul. Please, be nice,” Mrs. Mandrake said, putting her hand on his leg.

“Chary could have killed Scylla,” Mr. Mandrake said. “She was always jealous of her sister and hated her. Scylla was the smart one with a great job. Chary is just an accountant and runs that stupid shop of hers that is a money pit.
